Rangers extend forward Mitchell

The Rangers have agreed to a contract extension with forward John Mitchell, the team announced Friday.

Mitchell played 24 games with the Connecticut Whale and Toronto Marlies of the AHL last season, scoring eight goals and nine assists. He has played 229 career AHL games and has 49 goals and 72 assists.

The Rangers acquired Mitchell in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2012 draft on Feb. 28, 2011. With Toronto, Mitchell scored 20 goals and 35 assists in 159 games spanning three seasons.

Mitchell, 26, is a native of Oakville, Ontario.
