The Rangers have promoted Jeff Gorton to assistant general manager and Kevin Maxwell to director of professional scouting, the team announced Monday.

Gorton has been the team's player personnel assistant director for the last three seasons and has been with the Rangers for the last four seasons. He will now help General Manager Glen Sather with player transactions and contract negotiations.

Before joining the Rangers, Gorton spent 15 seasons with the Boston Bruins, including serving as the assistant general manager for the final seven years. He also was the team's interim general manager from March 27 to July 8, 2006, overseeing the team's draft efforts as well as overseeing free agency. He also served as the Bruins' Director of Scouting Information.

Maxwell has been a professional scout for the Rangers for three years and will now oversee the team's professional scouting operations. He previously had been a professional scout for the Dallas Stars and New York Islanders, while also serving as the director of professional scouting for the Islanders and the director of players personnel for the Hartford Whalers.

Maxwell played in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars, Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils. He scored six goals and added 15 assists in his career after being drafted by the North Stars in the 1979 draft.
