He can’t recall that goal.
In the first home game for the Rangers following Sept. 11, a little less than a month after the terrorist attacks, former Blueshirts defenseman and Hall of Famer Brian Leetch scored the game-winning goal in a 5-4 victory over the Sabres.
Yet Leetch couldn’t give you any details about it. Other details stick out more prominently in his mind, such as losing a close friend in John Murray.
"I really don't remember that [goal]," Leetch said Tuesday during the Rangers And Garden of Dreams 9/11 Road Tour & Reception. "That time was a really emotional hard time, from what happened to the country, personally what had happened to my friend, people in our building in New York City, in Boston, people that they were friends with or people that they lost, so it was difficult."
The week leading up to the anniversary of Sept. 11 is a tough and personal one for the Rangers legend because he lost a close friend in Murray. The two attended Boston College together and Murray was a Rangers fan who would go to the games and watch his friend play for the Blueshirts.
Murray worked for Cantor Fitzgerald when he died and Leetch said he was able to see Murray's wife and family recently, which he was pleased to do.
"We were together all the time from when he graduated to those last eight years of his life and he was a big part of mine," Leetch said.
While he can't remember his game-winning goal, Leetch can still recollect most of the details of Sept 11.
The Rangers opened training camp that day and he said half the team was already down at Madison Square Garden to do their training. The planes hit while Leetch was getting ready to leave and he ultimately did not go to MSG because he could not contact anyone.
"It's always one of those times that if you know somebody that lost [somebody] or you've lost somebody personally, it's always a tough time," Leetch said of the days leading up to the anniversary. "There's no question about it."
