The Islanders will announce their new captain at a press conference today, the team announced.

Odds-on favorite?

Swiss defenseman Mark Streit. The savvy 33-year-old missed all of last season with a devastating pre-season shoulder injury but is looking to bounce back this year.

Streit is a no-brainer to lead a young Islanders team. With the exception of last season, Streit has logged top minutes for the Islanders, stabilizing the back end and quarterback-ing the power play. His play and leadership have commanded the respect inside the Islanders room, where he is known as a strong-yet-understated presence.

The Islanders foresee Kyle Okposo as the captain of the future, but giving him some time to learn under Streit is a wise move. Okposo will be part of the team's young leadership structure, but look for the Islanders to make at least one veteran--Mike Mottau, Mark Eaton--an alternate captain as well.
