Sean Avery was matter-of-fact in addressing the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the first period he incurred in a post-hit scuffle with Islanders' defenseman Mike Mottau.

Why was he sent off with less than a minute remaining?

"Obviously, we know why," Avery said with what was, presumably, a reference to the officiating bias against him. "I don't know. Why would they send me off? It was a regular penalty."

Avery challenged reporters to ask the league office for answers, since he isn't receiving satisfactory explanations.

"I'd like you guys to start calling and asking that and then you can send me an explanation," Avery said.

Coach John Tortorella said he didn't think either player should have gotten a penalty for the fleeting tussle.

"They should've let them play. That's what I think," Tortorella said. "I looked at the tape. It's not worth discussing. They should've let them play."
