The Devils have recalled defensemen Matt Taormina and Alexander Urbom from their AHL affiliate in Albany, the team announced Friday.
Defenseman Andy Greene (foot fracture) was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 6, while right winger Cam Janssen (chest bruise) was placed on IR retroactive to Dec. 3.
Greene will miss the next month, so the Devils clearly wanted to add some extra blueliners in the even they're needed. Mark Fraser started in Greene's place on Thursday, but the kids may also see some time as well.
The 25-year-old Taormina had a lot of success last season. In 17 games, he scored three goals and added two assists. But his rookie year was cut short after he suffered a season-ending ankle injury during a November practice.
Janssen took a stick to the sternum on Saturday night in Winnipeg. He had X-rays and a CT scan each twice, according to the Newark Star-Ledger, but they were negative.
“I kind of collided with the guy and I think the butt end of his stick went right into my sternum. It paralyzed me. I couldn’t breathe,” Janssen told the newspaper.
“They were worried about something like a broken bone piercing my heart or lungs. None of that happened, but the pain I was in was excruciating. I felt something was wrong. I was very scared. I can tolerate pain, but that hurt more than anything I’ve felt in my life.”
