What it means: With a 3-0 win over Winnipeg Tuesday, the Rangers head into this week's All-Star break in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference standings. All-StarHenrik Lundqvist will travel to Ottawa with his head held high; he made 22 saves to record his fifth shutout of the season, 40th of his career. Ryan Callahan,John Mitchell and Brad Richards tallied goals as the Rangers secured their third win against the Jets this season and improved to 31-12-4 on the season.
Brad's back: Richards halted an eight-game goalless skid with a third-period strike to give the Rangers a cushy 3-0 lead with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. The 31-year-old center recently snapped a six-game scoreless skid in Saturday's 3-2 OT win in Boston with his assist on Marian Gaborik's game-winner.
Mitchell report: Converting on a deft feed from defenseman Michael Zotto, John Mitchell beat Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec high glove-side to extend the Rangers lead 2-0. Mitchell’s second period-marker at 13:22 was his third goal in five games.
Boyle-ing point: Brian Boyle was in obvious pain after Jets defenseman Andrew Ladd fell on his right foot early in the second, but did not leave the game. The hulking center missed two shifts while grimacing on the bench, but returned later in the period for an abbreviated turn and a penalty-killing shift.
Captain Callahan: Recording his fourth point (three goals, one assist) in as many games, Rangers captain Ryan Callahan opened the scoring with his 17th goal of the season. Callahan pounced on defenseman Anton Stralman’s rebound, loose underneath Pavelec’s pads, and took a swipe for an easy put-back at 4:05 in the first period.
Dos Nueve: With backup goaltender Martin Biron out with the flu, the Rangers recalled Chad Johnson Tuesday from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League. The 25-year-old netminder is 10-8-5 with a .910 and 2.64 goals against average this season.
Take two: One fight between Mike Rupp and Chris Thorburn wasn't enough. After the two dropped the gloves at 6:14 of the first, the two players went back at it during the second. The Rangers lead the league with 38 fighting majors.
