Devils, MacLean get in win column

Ilya Kovalchuk finally got in the goal column and the Devils and first-year head coach John MacLean are finally in the win column as a result. (Coincidence?)

New Jersey topped Buffalo 1-0 in OT, thanks to a sterling showing by Martin Brodeur (24 saves) and a timely snipe by Kovalchuk past goalie Ryan Miller.

Box Score

You can catch up on the game here, but there was some equally big news off the ice to get to.

Brian Rolston will require surgery to repair a sports hernia and will be sidelined 4-6 weeks. The cash-strapped Devils will place him on long term injured reserve and free up $5 million in badly needed cap space. The cap relief likely means the Devils will be able to dress a full complement of 18 skaters for their next game after playing the past two with a short bench.

The downside is obviously that Rolston was a 20-goal scorer last season and his absence from the lineup will be felt. Rookies Mattias Tedenby and Jacob Josefson figure to get a shot when the Devils start calling up players from their AHL affiliate.
