Stevens, Shaw named Devils' assistants
By Mike Mazzeo
The Devils Tuesday announced that they’ve hired Scott Stevens and Matt Shaw as their new assistant coaches under Peter DeBoer.
Goaltending coach Chris Terreri and assistant coach Dave Barr will return, rounding out the coaching staff.
GM Lou Lamoriello said Stevens, 48, who captained the Devils to three Stanley Cups (1995, 2000, 2003), will be a full-time assistant, while Shaw, who ran the power play in San Jose, will hold a similar role in New Jersey.
“What he brings, you can’t teach,” Lamoriello said of Stevens, according to the team’s official Twitter account.
Stevens, a Hall of Fame defenseman known for his physicality and bone-jarring hits, spent 22 years in the NHL. Previously, he spent five years as a special assistant coach in New Jersey.
Shaw spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Sharks.
Devils assistant coach Larry Robinson left in the offseason to become an associate head coach in San Jose, while assistant Adam Oates departed to became the head coach of the Capitals.
