The Isles are in trouble
By Mike Hume
With their next game not until Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Islanders have some time to stew over their losing streak, which reached 10 games after falling to the Kings 5-1 Saturday.
With the scoring drying up the Islanders are now tied for last place in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers and are closing in on the New Jersey Devils for the fewest goals in the league. As it stands now, the Isles will need to average 1.22 points per game in order to hit 90 for the season and have a shot at the playoffs. Put another way, New York needs to play like a 100-point team to hit that mark.
Is it possible? I suppose. But to date this roster hasn’t shown anything to suggest it can perform at that kind of elite level. In short, it’s getting late early for the Isle.
