Brunner joins Devils on PTO
By Katie Strang
NEWARK, N.J. -- The Devils have signed forward Damien Brunner to a professional tryout contract for training camp.
General manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed the news Monday night before the Devils' preseason opener against the Rangers. Lamoriello said Brunner is already in New Jersey and will begin practicing with the team starting on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Swiss forward had 12 goals and 26 points in 44 games for the Detroit Red Wings last season.
“He’s a natural scorer,” Lamoriello said. “He’s scored throughout his whole career. He’s a very skillful player.”
Lamoriello acknowledged that the team had inquired about Brunner during free agency this summer. After that didn't work out, the team decided to pursue him again as a training camp tryout.
But that doesn’t mean a contract will be automatically forthcoming once camp is over. Brunner will have to earn a spot by cracking the Devils' roster.
“No promises, no guarantees, nothing,” Lamoriello said. “Very up-front situation. Both of us know where each other is at.”
Lamoriello said the plan is to get Brunner into some exhibition games to assess “where’s he’s at” and evaluate whether he can be a good fit for the team.
Prior to joining Detroit, Brunner played five years in the Swiss A league in his native Switzerland.
