Devils make cuts; more to come?
By Katie Strang
Devils coach Pete DeBoer said that the nine players not on the ice Monday for practice have been cut and indicated that GM Lou Lamoriello would be making more cuts later in the day.
According to reports, seven of those players-- Mark Fraser, Vladimir Zharkov, Stephane Veilleux, Rod Pelley, Tim Sestito, Jay Leach, Peter Harrold and Matthew Corrente-- have been placed on waivers by the Devils this afternoon.
Defenseman Alexander Urbom and goaltender Keith Kinkaid also did not practice with the team Monday.
Tryouts Petr Sykora, Steve Bernier and Anton Stralman all skated in practice and should know their status with the team soon.
"I'm still here, right?" Sykora joked. "That's a positive."
Bryce Salvador (hip/groin) felt good after the team's strenuous 75-minute practice and fully expects to be ready by the season opener Saturday against Philadelphia.
"I'll be ready for Saturday," he said.
DeBoer had Ilya Kovalchuk skate with center Dainius Zubrus Monday, although Kovalchuk has played with Jacob Josefson for most of the preseason.
"I'm not really married to the line combinations unless they work and they work consistently," DeBoer said.
What did he think of Kovalchuk and Josefson together?
"It's not a dead experiment, but the last two games, I didn't walk out of the rink saying, 'Boy that was some great chemistry there."
DeBoer wouldn't discuss whether rookie defenseman Adam Larsson has made the team; Larsson said he has not yet been informed either way.
