Gallant signs one-year deal

The Islanders have signed tough guy Brett Gallant to a one-year, entry-level contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Gallant, 24, has spent the past three seasons with the team's minor-league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Considering Gallant has racked up a whopping 174 penalty minutes in 37 games for the Sound Tigers this season, it's pretty clear this was a move to add a depth forward that can add some extra toughness to the Islanders lineup.

The Islanders host the Penguins Tuesday and then make a trip into Manhattan on Thursday to face their Atlantic Division rival in the New York Rangers.
