NEW YORK -- New York Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck sparked a bit of a backlash on Twitter with his rather liberal application of eye black for Tuesday's outdoor practice at Yankee Stadium, though he insisted he did not mean for it to be taken as offensive.
The 26-year-old smeared eye black on his cheeks and nose. Players sometimes wear strips of black under their eyes to help reduce glare from the sunlight.
When asked whether he realized that some people may consider it offensive, Clutterbuck said: "No, not at all."
Clutterbuck's decision sounded like more of a cosmetic mishap than anything. He said he tried putting it on his face and it just got messy.
