There definitely won't be much of a goaltending controversy now, with Evgeni Nabokov on the shelf with a lower-body injury that reportedly could sideline him for extended time.
Newsday's Arthur Staple reported Sunday that Nabokov could miss four weeks or more with the groin strain suffered in the team's 5-4 shootout win over the Red Wings on Saturday.
On Monday, the Islanders placed the veteran netminder on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 16. The team also recalled goaltending prospect Anders Nilsson from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.
Even before Nabokov sustained the injury in the first period of play Saturday, he appeared to have lost the starting gig to youngster Kevin Poulin. The 23-year-old Poulin made three consecutive starts before he was forced to relieve Nabokov against Detroit.
