Green and White in the books

It took just a few seconds for the offense to stake its claim in the annual Green and White scrimmage, as RB LaDainian Tomlinson beat LB David Harris on a go route to catch a 70-yard pass from QB Mark Sanchez for a touchdown.

"It's pretty exciting, and that's the point," Tomlinson said. "I can still play this game. I've still got a lot in the tank."

The white celebrated with Sanchez and the tone was set. Sanchez ended the day 3-of-7 for 114 yards and a sack. He also connected with Tomlinson for 15 yards and Santonio Holmes for 29 yards. Sanchez didn't have any turnovers.

(Full disclosure on the numbers: The Jets didn't keep them and the sight lines weren't perfect, so give or take a yard.)

Holmes also caught a 33-yarder from QB Mark Brunell while playing with the second-team offense in the second series of a very unstructured scrimmage. It lasted 67 minutes with a long break for special teams practice. There was no official score or stats. Nick Folk missed a field goal looking into the sun on Brunell's first series, and coach Rex Ryan later said Folk was cold and hadn't known he was going in the game. Maybe Ryan is trying to stave off Folk Watch, Part II.

The story of the scrimmage though was Sanchez, Tomlinson and Holmes and the way the variety of offensive options will help the Jets this season.

"I thought Sanchez really looked good today, great command we’ve been seeing," Ryan said. "[He] hit a lot of guys, had that one bad throw but other than that he was sharp as a tack."

Sanchez just got a bit of time, but wanted more.

"I said 'Why? You’ll just throw an interception,'" Ryan said. "Gotta humble the kid a little bit."

Holmes said he told Sanchez they would be roomates because he was the only player without one. Sanchez disputed that, and joked that if you don't see Holmes in practice on Monday, you know why.

"Mark is gaining so much trust in us," said Holmes, who has been impressive since arriving in camp on Wednesday.

In other news: WR David Clowney is still away for personal reasons. Ryan said that he would hopefully return on Monday. TE Jeff Cumberland (head) did not play. Fullback Jason Davis made two good plays with the third string, a run and getting a first down on a third-and-1 scrum.

Matt Slauson and Vlad Ducasse rotated in with the first string offensive line at left guard. S Emanuel Cook had a pick. Chauncey Washington had a TD run playing with QB Kevin O'Connell, and RB Joe McKnight had a good day playing with second and third rotations.

It was family day after the game. Jason Taylor, Damian Woody, Antonio Cromartie, Jerricho Cotchery and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer had their children out there. The Jets said about 9,500 showed up to watch here in Cortland.

Ryan did fine Schottenheimer and linebackers coach Bob Sutton for their F-bombs the other day in practice, according to Sanchez.
