Bart Scott wasn’t in the mood to entertain reporters as the Jets packed up their lockers in Florham Park on Monday. When one camera person got too close as Scott carried out a hefty bag filled with his stuff, Scott couldn’t wait to get out of the locker room.
“Get that f------ thing out of my face,” Scott said.
Scott threw in a few more unprintables for good measure. Asked if the report that he would be gone by the start of next season was true, Scott said, “I don’t know why, I’ve got a guaranteed contract for $4 million.”
Scott, a linebacker and one of two defensive players that coach Rex Ryan brought up from Baltimore when he took the Jets head coaching job in 2009. He hasn’t played as well this season, and toned down his “Can’t Wait!” rhetoric as a result.
Scott wasn’t the only Jet who didn’t want to comment. Darrelle Revis walked in quickly wearing a grey hoodie and said “Leave me alone, leave me alone,” as he walked to is locker.
“Can you talk?”
“No,” replied the Jets' Pro Bowl cornerback and team captain.
“Why not?”
“Because I said so.”
Santonio Holmes gave a soft “No” when asked to stop as he walked briskly from locker to exit carrying one box. Later, Jeremy Kerley stopped by to grab a recharger Holmes appeared to leave behind.
Holmes may not have stayed but he was a presence as reporters asked players what they thought about the final two minutes of the Jets game, when Holmes was benched for an argument. Right tackle Wayne Hunter called out Holmes for having given up in a still-winnable game. Patrick Turner was inserted into the lineup and scored on the drive.
Ryan didn’t call out Holmes in Monday's tearful team meeting before players returned to the locker room, but he did allude to the fight on the field and said it was unacceptable.
That speech may have contributed to the bleak mood in the locker room, as some of the Jets' best players declined to speak or, in the case of LaDainian Tomlinson, Dustin Keller and Plaxico Burress, avoided the locker room altogether.
Instead, players such as backup wide receiver Turner were there to answer tough questions about team chemistry and the future of the Jets.
“It’s never just one person,” Turner said. “We have to so a better job as teammates.”
