Lost amid the madness of Monday's get-away day in Florham Park was the quiet departure of Plaxico Burress, who avoided the locker room during the media period.
For somone who arrived in August with such fanfare, it's hard to believe that Burress could slip away so inconspicuously. Perhaps that was a statement on his part. He and Santonio Holmes are friends, so maybe he didn't want to get involved in that mess.
But, as we reported Sunday, Burress, 34, won't be back with the Jets. He signed a one-year, $3 million contract, so he's an unrestricted free agent. The Jets want to get younger and faster at receiver.
On Monday, GM Mike Tannenbaum didn't give a direct answer on whether he'd like to re-sign Burress.
"He did a great job for us," Tannenbaum said. "I thought his blocking, he did a really good job with that. Obviously, he helped us in the red zone. Was our passing game perfect? Obviously, it wasn't, but I wouldn't just put it on Plaxico. And he was a real pro. He was very insightful on the teams we were playing. I enjoyed picking his brain. He's really an interesting guy and he was a really good teammate. Free agency is a couple of months away, so we'll look at everything."
To his credit, Burress played every game, silencing those (including me and Joe Namath) who seriously doubted he'd be able to stay healthy. He finished with 45 receptions for 612 yards, both third on the team. He was tied with Holmes for a team-high eight touchdowns.
