Finally, after much anticipation, the TV-watching nation will see what the New York Jets are all about.
"Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the NY Jets" makes its debut tonight (10 p.m. Eastern) on HBO -- the first of five episodes. Perhaps not coincidentally, Rex Ryan gave the players a night off. No doubt, they will be glued to their TV sets in their dorm on the SUNY-Cortland campus.
"I'm trying to get an early copy," C Nick Mangold said. "They won't give it to me ... something about I'd probably put it on Twitter. I don't know, it's kind of like sausage. You don't want to see it being made, but you love eating it."
Team officials viewed the first episode Wednesday morning, but they were tight-lipped on the content. There could be some news in the show, with the team engaged in a contract staredown with star cornerback Darrelle Revis. The show's producers wanted to follow Jets officials last Friday to Roscoe, N.Y., where they met Revis' agents for a negotiating session, but the agents didn't want the cameras on the premises.
You don't need to be a TV exec to figure out that the stars of the show will be Ryan, QB Mark Sanchez, NT Kris Jenkins and LB Bart Scott -- the most charismatic players on a team filled with them. Don't be surprised if you hear some four-letter words from Ryan, and, no, we're not talking about "punt" or "pass." This could be rated PG-13.
The HBO cameras are everywhere in camp, yet they're really not noticeable. The most conspicuous camera was the "Chopper Cam," a 25-pound helicopter that flew over the practice field. That created a distraction. Ryan, thinking target practice, wanted to grab a football and take his best shot. He was joking -- we think.
