Pre-game: Jets vs. Giants

Settled into the new press box here at the Big Gray Lady -- aka New Meadowlands Stadium -- and here are some pre-game thoughts:

1. The New York Jets' ring of honor already is on display. So much for a halftime unveiling. The names are there, below the upper deck in the end zones: Weeb Ewbank, Don Maynard and Joe Namath in one end zone, with Winston Hill, Curtis Martin and Joe Klecko in the other. There will be a halftime ceremony, honoring the six greats. They will be available to the media at 7:15.

2. Just a thought: Why not wait until the regular-season opener to unveil the ring of honor? I bet the Jets wanted to beat the New York Giants to the punch.

3. Some things I'll be watching for once the game begins:

A. Mark Sanchez. He says his surgically repaired left knee is a non-issue. He's probably right, but let's see how he responds in the face of a live rush. Also eager to see how he distributes the ball to his new and old weapons.

B. Kyle Wilson. Revis Island is vacant, and the rookie from Piscataway, N.J., is on the spot. Wilson will start opposite Antonio Cromartie, and will slide inside to the slot when the Jets are in nickel. If Wilson gets roasted, the "Please-Pay-Revis" chants will start. With the world watching on ESPN, that would be a little embarrassing to Jets management.

C. The New "Kids." Well, they're not kids, but I'm eager to see RB LaDainian Tomlinson, WR Santonio Holmes, OLB Jason Taylor and Cromartie. Most of all, I want to see Tomlinson carry the ball against the Giants' starting defense.

D. Folk Hero. PK Nick Folk is having a solid camp, but let's see how he responds when the lights go on. A couple of hiccups and the Jets might be forced to commence a kicking search.

E. Left Guard Battle. Matt Slauson starts, rookie Vlad Ducasse comes off the bench. When Alan Faneca was at left guard, the bread-and-butter running play in short yardage involved Faneca pulling to his right. Slauson isn't known for pulling. Let's hope for a short-yardage situation to see how he responds.

F. The Terminator. Based on Rex Ryan's comments, rookie John Conner is the next Larry Csonka at fullback. He'll get some early work, replacing Tony Richardson. Giants linebackers, beware.

G. Backup QB. Curious to see how they use Kellen Clemens, who isn't guaranteed a roster spot. Mark Brunell needs the work, and Kevin O'Connell has to prove he deserves a roster spot.

4. It's raining hard here, two hours before kickoff. They need to close the roof. Oh, that's right, there's no roof.
