The Jets finished their next-to-last day in Cortland with a special-teams practice, concentrating on kickoff returns. On Monday night, they were reasonably successful on kickoff returns, with diminutive Larry Taylor (30 yards) and incumbent Brad Smith (25) handling the chore.
Taylor (5-6, 180) is called "Little LT" by his teammates. A wide receiver, he has an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster, but he's quick as a hiccup and tough. He will get plenty of playing time Saturday night in Carolina.
Here's an interesting note: Special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff has starting S Jim Leonhard on his kickoff coverage team. Westhoff may use starters in an occasional special-teams role this season. It's risky, but he wants the best athletes on the field, if possible.
