Rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill, a likely starter, sat out Thursday's OTA practice with a "lot of tightness" in his right hamstring, he said.

Hill said it happened Tuesday. He downplayed the severity, saying he expects to participate in next week's mandatory minicamp.

The second-round pick from Georgia Tech got off to a fast start, impressing with his size and ability to stretch a defense. Because of his lack of experience in a pro-style offense, he can't afford to miss too much time.

INJURY REPORT: OLB Bryan Thomas (Achilles' tendon), LG Matt Slauson(shoulder) and RB Bilal Powell (undisclosed) also sat out team drills. Thomas and Slauson will be limited in minicamp ... The phantom safety, LaRon Landry, missed the OTAs as he continues to rehab from last season's Achilles' tendon injury. He's expected at the minicamp, according to Rex Ryan. Of course, it's mandatory, so he'd be fined if he were a no-show. Ryan said he's confident Landry, a free-agent acquisition, will be ready for training camp. "I think he's doing what he thinks is in his best interest," Ryan said. Ryan said he's not sure how much, if anything, Landry would be able to do in minicamp ... OLB Calvin Pace missed Thursday's practice. He notified the team beforehand. Ricky Sapp worked in his spot ... LB Nick Bellore missed last week’s OTA with a case of strep throat. On Thursday he was back ... Rookie WR Jordan White (broken foot) is getting around on a scooter.

ALMOST PERFECT ATTEDANCE: Ryan bragged about the team's attendance during voluntary workouts, throwing out some numbers. Of the 2,211 workout opportunities (for the entire roster, going back to April), only 33 were missed, according to Ryan. That's 99 percent attendance. He said it's the best they've had in his four offseasons as the coach.

"I don't believe that happened anywhere else in the league," he said. "I would challenge any other team to have these numbers."

Ryan made reference to former Dolphins loudmouth Channing Crowder, who once mocked the Jets by calling them OTA champions. Said Ryan: "Going into this, I wanted to be the OTA champion. Clearly, I want to be Super Bowl champs like the Giants, but this is a step in the right direction."

REX LOVES HIS D: On Wednesday night, owner Woody Johnson said the defense is "loaded." Who is Ryan to argue? "He thinks it's going to be special and so do I," Ryan said. He said this is the deepest defense he's had in four years, adding that the depth at inside linebacker "is crazy."

TONE'S TIME OVERSEAS: Wideout Santonio Holmes recently spent a few days at a U.S. Air Force base in Germany, a USO-sponsored trip. He mingled with U.S. troops, listening to their war stories, and it made an impression on him.

"We're worried about hamstrings to our wide-receiver corps and knee injuries," he said, "but it has nothing on what these guys have been faced with -- the scrap metal from all bombing to having their trucks blown up right in their face to guys getting shot in the middle of nowhere. It gives you a different perspective on life."

ODDS AND ENDS: Ryan said two offensive assistants (he wouldn't name them) got so fired up in a recent closed practice that they nearly came to blows ... Caleb Schlauderaff is working as the backup center. Vladimir Ducasse has been working at left guard in Slauson's absence ... In case you're wondering -- and you probably are -- the Jets have no interest in Chad Ochocinco, according to a source. Their receiving corps is young, but Ryan said he feels comfortable with the current group ... Ryan on his small part in the new Adam Sandler movie: "All I wanted to be was not terrible, and I think I wasn't terrible. My wife and son said it was OK, so that was good." ... Ryan has encouraged C Nick Mangold to take him up on the offer to watch sister Holley compete in the Olympics during training camp. Mangold still plans to decline. He joked that he fears England’s “warm beer.”
