FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There’s no way to couch this; Santonio Holmes doesn’t like talking to the media. He’s never come out and said it directly, but actions sometimes speak louder than words.
The Jets wide receiver -- who said he was a new man this season -- seemed a lot like the old Holmes when he stood up reporters on Wednesday.
Holmes spoke last week, but denied he tweaked his hamstring when he pulled himself out of drills. Reporters requested Holmes on Tuesday to follow up after coach Rex Ryan said his wideout would be limited at minicamp because of the strain.
Holmes said he’d speak on Wednesday. But when the time came, Holmes told a PR staffer he’d be back and then never returned to the locker room. Another PR person confirmed that Holmes would not be available for the rest of the day.
Holmes participated in individual drills today, but didn’t take part in team drills for the second straight day of the minicamp. Last week, Holmes said he thought he was overused on his first day back from a trip to Germany. He asked to be taken out of the remaining drills that Thursday, the last OTA of the offseason.
Players are required to be available to the media each day of the mandatory minicamp, and speaking to the press -- and by extension to the fans -- is part of a player's job during the season.
It’s a job the former captain has never relished. But it's a lot easier to do when the team is winning. If Holmes shows the 2010 talent that won the Jets games, fans won't care if he clams up or not.
