New York Jets WR Laveranues Coles will face one of his old teams Friday night -- the Washington Redskins. You may recall that it was the Redskins who stole Coles from the Jets in 2003 with an enormous free-agent contract -- seven years, $35 million, including a $13 million signing bonus.
Tuesday in the locker room, I asked Coles if he had any emotions about facing Washington, where he lasted only two seasons after a bitter divorce.
"I'm very thankful to (owner) Daniel Snyder to building my home down in Jacksonville," said Coles, referring to his 25,000-square foot mansion. "That's about it."
Half-jokingly, Coles was asked if he thought about naming the place after Snyder or displaying a momento in his honor.
"Maybe I'll put up a picture of him in one of his $80,000 suits or those $50,000 boots he wears," Coles cracked.
Seriously, Coles doesn't expect to play much Friday. The starters will play about three quarters, so Coles -- a backup -- suspects he'll see only garbage time. Coles said he's okay with the lack of playing time, and that he understands why he was re-signed. It's to provide depth, with WR Santonio Holmes due to serve a four-game suspension. But, by no means, does Coles think he's washed up.
"I still got some gas left in the tank," he said.
