CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Taking stock of Day 1 at Jets training camp. What did we learn?
• Circus in town: Yeah, this will get a little crazy. According to the Jets, 82 media members showed up to cover reporting day. Imagine when they get around to playing football, which will occur Friday. All the players did Thursday was unload their cars, check into their dorm and grab some dinner for the team meeting. From a media standpoint, there wasn't much to see, but plenty came to see it.
• Rex's faux pas: Rex Ryan gave a non-answer when asked if there is a quarterback competition and, in a related question, he declined to guarantee that Mark Sanchez will be the opening-day starter. I'm not sure where he was going with that, but let me say this: Barring injury, Tim Tebow has no chance of unseating Sanchez in the preseason. None. Zero. It's hard to win a job when you're not getting first-team reps, which probably will be the case with Tebow.
• Sanchez is focused: Mentally and physically, Sanchez is in the best shape on his career, according to Ryan. I believe him. Sanchez is a ripped 230 pounds (up 12 pounds from last season) and he sounds ultra-confident. He admitted that his fundamentals regressed over the last couple of seasons, but he concentrated on footwork in the offseason, timing up his pass-drops with the receivers' routes. He looks and sounds ready. Now all he has to do is ... well, do it.

Sanchez sounds like he's really bought into Mornhinweg's system: "I just really feel like this coaching staff will get the best out of me."

I'm wondering if Jay Z makes it to Cortland this summer for training camp. I'm sure he'd be a big hit at Doug's Fish Fry. #Jets

Some perspective required: #Jets are learning new offensive system, WR corps depleted, defense always ahead of offense this early.

Early thought on #Jets QB comp: Ugh. Sanchez 6-for-11, 3 INTs, 1 sack. (1 INT may have been a sack.) Geno Smith 3-for-10, 1 INT, 1 sack
