CORTLAND, N.Y. -- There was no practice Tuesday, but there's no such thing as a quiet day with the Jets:
1. Wayne Hunter shouldn't relax. Just because the Jeff Otah trade was voided doesn't mean the Jets will hand the starting right tackle job to Hunter. Mike Tannenbaum said Hunter has the "inside track," but he also said, "He's our starting right tackle until that changes" -- a Yogi-ism from the GM. Tannenbaum said they will study teams with depth at tackle, but unless they're willing to give up something significant, all they will get is a developmental player (think Caleb Schlauderaff, except bigger) or a veteran on his last legs. In other words, prepare for another season of Hunter.
2. Antonio Cromartie will have an interesting practice Wednesday. The cornerback insulted every wide receiver not named Santonio Holmes by telling ESPN he has the potential to be the second-best receiver on the team. That should fire up players like Chaz Schilens, Patrick Turner and even rookie Stephen Hill. That could make for some heated one-on-one battles on the practice field. As you probably know, the Jets are talking about giving Cromartie a small role at receiver.
3. When it comes to Holmes, the Jets look the other way. Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan, in separate interviews, refused to scold Holmes for his "scapegoat" comment from Monday. Yes, it's true, Holmes, in an interview with ESPN New York 98.7 FM, took some responsibility for last season's behavior -- a positive step. But he overshadowed that by complaining about his benching in the season finale. The Jets' brass should let him know it's time to move on. Dredging up last season's problems won't help.
