Holmes leads cast of walking wounded

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Jets have 12 wide receivers on the roster (not counting the self-proclaimed star-in-waiting, Antonio Cromartie), but they finished practice Wednesday with only four healthy bodies.

And Rex Ryan wasn't happy. The coach said some players didn't show up for training camp in top condition. He didn't lump Santonio Holmes into that group, but Holmes didn't participate in a two-minute drill at the end of practice because of leg tightness. Ryan said he's not sure if Holmes will practice Thursday.

Ryan was irked with his young receivers, which means virtually the entire receiving corps. They're dropping like flies, just as they did in minicamp, when a rash of soft-tissue injuries took a toll on the position.

"Part of it is tempo, but part of it is the responsibility of the guys," Ryan said. "You have to be in shape, you have to take care of your bodies. That's frustrating."

After practice, Ryan challenged the players, telling them they need to keep pace with the fast tempo. Under new coordinator Tony Sparano, the offense is operating at a quicker pace, resulting in more plays in practice -- and it's more taxing for the receivers.

The only healthy bodies at the end were Stephen Hill, Patrick Turner, Dexter Jackson and Raymond Webber. Yikes. Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (groin) were among those that didn't practice.

At the end of the minicamp in June, Ryan challenged the players to be in top shape for training camp. Evidently, some didn't heed the warning.

"When you break away and you're away from the team, you have to be in world-class shape," Ryan said.

Ryan is really bothered by this. On Monday, he announced that the pre-practice stretching period would be extended to 20 minutes from 10. He could dial back the number of players, but that would hurt the defense.

"We've identified the concern and we're trying to fix it," he said. "Obviously, there are still some issues."
