Three things we learned on Day 8

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A quick take on Thursday at the Jets:

1. The President isn't high on the QB situation. No, we're not referring to Neil Glat, the Jets' president. We're talking about President Obama, who, as a guest on an Ohio sports station, threw shade on the Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow dynamic. Obama said he's not a fan of QB controversies at the start of the season, adding that Jets fans "should be nervous." Maybe he would have a different opinion if he had seen Tebow in the Wildcat. Me? I can't wait for Rex Ryan's response Friday.

2. Taking one for the team. Predictably, Sanchez took the high road when asked about the prospect of Tebow serving as the goal-line quarterback. What did you expect him to say, that he hates it? Sanchez has to be on board with the entire Tebow experiment; if he shows the slighest hint of skepticism, the whole thing blows up. All eyes will be on Sanchez. That's a lot of pressure.

3. A sleeper in the backfield. Bilal Powell, coming off a non-descript rookie season, is showing why the Jets used a fourth-round pick on him. He's having a nice camp, even getting some reps with the first team. If he keeps it up, he could leap-frog Joe McKnight on the depth chart, backing up Shonn Greene. Powell also has a chance to win the third-down job because he's better than McKnight in pass protection. Ryan made a great point about Powell: His pattern, based on his career at Louisville, is to start slow and finish strong. Maybe the Jets are seeing the upside in Year 2.
