CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Take-aways from Monday's practice:
1. It's time to play another team. The Jets have reached the point in training camp where they're tired of hitting each other. That gets tedious, which leads to frustration, which leads to what happened Monday: A Joe McKnight/D'Anton Lynn scuffle that quickly escalated into a melee about 25 feet from the sideline, near the fans. As far as training-camp fights go, this wasn't anything close to a 10 on the nasty scale, but it was embarrassing for a team looking to shed its image as a dysfunctional outfit. On Friday night, they get to take it out on the Bengals in the preseason opener -- a welcomed respite from the drudgery of camp.
2. Welcome back, kids. The Jets' top two draft picks, DE Quinton Coples (two sacks) and WR Stephen Hill (50-yard TD catch), impressed in practice after disappearing for a few days. Coples made his plays against the second-team offensive line, so let's not go throw a parade, but it was a nice step for him. Hill beat CB Darrelle Revis in a 7-on-7 drill, which is saying something. Now the issue becomes consistency. Can Coples and Hill show up on a daily basis?
3. Safety plan comes into focus. LaRon Landry saw significant time with the starting defense, the first time he and Yeremiah Bell worked as a tandem in camp. Until Monday, Landry worked behind Eric Smith, but it was only a matter of time before Landry moved up. Living up to his reputation, Landry delivered a couple of big hits. He also will be a huge factor on blitzes. Instead of sending a 180-pound defensive back, as they've done in the past, the Jets can use the 220-pound Landry on a safety blitz -- and he packs a wallop.

For those who want Idzik to cut Goodson asap to send message: He's deliberate on big decisions, i.e Revis, Tebow. Figures to do same here.

Idzik's interest in QB market, post-Garrard, shows he's not content with Sanchez/Smith. He wants options. Hardly a vote of conf for Sanchez.

Per @TonyGrossi, the #Jets expressed interest in QB Hoyer before he signed w/ Browns. As noted yesterday, Idzik not content to stand pat.
