With one preseason game in the books, this is a good time to take stock of the roster. This is my initial 53-man roster projection:
QUARTERBACK (3): Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy
Quick hit: This is pretty cut and dried. Maybe Matt Simms gets a look on the practice squad.
RUNNING BACK (4): Shonn Greene, Bilal Powell, Joe McKnight, Terrance Ganaway
Quick hit: McKnight sticks because of his kick-returning ability. He impressed Friday night, but he’s maddeningly inconsistent. Powell was used as the third-down back, ahead of McKnight.
FULLBACK (1): John Conner
Quick hit: The Terminator won't get terminated, but he needs to be more consistent.
WIDE RECEIVER (5): Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner, Jordan White
Quick hit: This position could have a new face by opening day. If they keep five, I don't see Chaz Schilens here. The Jets would have to eat $500,000 in guaranteed money if they cut him.
TIGHT END (3): Dustin Keller, Jeff Cumberland, Josh Baker
Quick hit: Cumberland needs to show he can be a reliable blocker. He allowed a sack Friday night, not a good start. There could be a new face here by the opener. The best-case scenario for Aussie Hayden Smith is the practice squad.
OFFENSIVE LINE (9): D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Vladimir Ducasse, Caleb Schlauderaff, Austin Howard, Robert Griffin
Quick hit: On Friday night, the second-team line consisted of, left to right, Howard, Ducasse (whom the Jets insist isn't going anywhere), Slauson, Schlauderaff and Stephon Heyer. I think Heyer will be the odd-man out because Howard can play both sides.
DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Muhammad Wilkerson, Sione Pouha, Mike DeVito, Quinton Coples, Kenrick Ellis, Marcus Dixon.
Quick hit: Former Raider Jay Richardson, who had a strip sack in the game, is making a push. A couple of years ago, a guy like Richardson would've been a virtual shoo-in, but the talent has improved considerably.
LINEBACKER (9): Calvin Pace, David Harris, Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas, Aaron Maybin, Demario Davis, Josh Mauga, Nick Bellore, Garrett McIntyre.
Quick hit: Ricky Sapp could push McIntyre if he gets healthy. Keep an eye on Davis, who could challenge Scott if he develops quickly.
SECONDARY (10): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell, Eric Smith, Kyle Wilson, Ellis Lankster, Antonio Allen, Josh Bush, Isaiah Trufant.
Quick hit: Fierce battle for that last spot between Trufant, Julian Posey and D'Anton Lynn. Rex Ryan always carries big numbers in the secondary.
SPECIALISTS (3): Nick Folk, T.J. Conley, Tanner Purdum
Quick hit: Folk has outkicked Josh Brown in camp, but the placekicking battle isn't over.
QUARTERBACK (3): Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy
Quick hit: This is pretty cut and dried. Maybe Matt Simms gets a look on the practice squad.
