CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Santonio Holmes, nursing a rib-cartilage injury, was nowhere to be seen Wednesday on the practice field. According to the team, he was inside the facility, receiving treatment.
In recent days, Holmes was on the field, working out on the side with other injured players and participating in light positional drills. Rex Ryan already has said that Holmes won't play Saturday night against the Giants -- a no-brainer -- but the question now becomes his availability for the third preseason game.
Other practice notes:
OFF THE MARK: This wasn't Mark Sanchez's best day, by any means. He completed nine of 13 passes, but he had two interceptions in team drills -- his first multiple-INT day in camp. On the first interception, he overthrew TE Jeff Cumberland, the ball deflecting off Cumberland's hands to rookie S Josh Bush. On the second interception, Sanchez tried to squeeze a pass into tight man-to-man coverage, but was picked off by CB Antonio Cromartie. He also was "sacked" three times.
Backup QB Tim Tebow (4-for-9) also had a sub-par day. He had an interception (LB Garrett McIntyre) and a sack.
BUCKET LIST: The day wasn't a total loss for the quarterbacks. On the far field, Sanchez, Greg McElroy and rookie Matt Simms engaged in a little target practice, throwing a ball about 40 yards into a plastic garbage can. All three dropped a pass in the bucket, drawing huge cheers from the crowd -- biggest cheers of the day. Where was Tebow? He was on the other field, participating in a special-teams drill.
INJURY REPORT: Holmes, WR Jeremy Kerley (hamastring), WR Chaz Schilens (ankle), NT Sione Pouha (back) were among those who didn't practice. Pouha made an appearance on the field, but didn't do anything. WR Stephen Hill (finger) was limited, but he particiapated in some team drills.
BIG DAY FOR TIGHT ENDS: Sanchez and Tebow had most of their success throwing to Dustin Keller, Cumberland and Josh Baker. They consistently got open in the middle of the field.
ODDS AND ENDS: Nice practice for CB Ellis Lankster, who intercepted Tebow in a 7-on-7 drill. ... Cromartie made another reception, but it was nullifed because of a penalty. ... Even the greats experience a hiccup every now and then. CB Darrelle Revis surrendered a 30-yard completion to WR Royce Pollard in a 7-on-7. ... S D'Anton Lynn drilled WR Patrick Turner on a pass over the middle.

Some perspective required: #Jets are learning new offensive system, WR corps depleted, defense always ahead of offense this early.
