• If rookie RB Joe McKnight weren't a draft pick (a fourth-rounder), there's a good chance he'd be looking for work. For the third straight game, McKnight lost a fumble. This was a bad fumble. He ran into a blocker, hardly a violent collision, and put the ball on the ground. It was recovered by S Kurt Coleman and returned 64 yards for a touchdown, giving the Eagles a 10-0 lead. Save for a 67-yard punt return against the Carolina Panthers, McKnight has done little to make the team. But he's on scholarship for a year, presumably.
• Backup QB Mark Brunell, who started for the resting Mark Sanchez, discovered a can of Rustoleum. In his mist impressive outing of the preseason, the soon-to-be-40 quarterback completed five of seven passes for 46 yards in the first quarter. And there was one drop, by rookie FB John Conner. Brunell showed an ability to move a little in the pocket, hitting TE Matt Mulligan on a rollout. He also found WR Santonio Holmes for 10 yards on a slant.
$bull; As expected, Vernon Gholston started at outside linebacker. Facing the Eagles' backups, Gholston flashed in the first quarter, recording a pressure and a couple of tackles. He seemed more comfortable at his old position than he did last year. This bodes well for the defensive depth after losing OLB Calvin Pace (foot) for a few weeks.
