FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan confirmed the obvious Monday, saying the Jets will indeed run some Wildcat plays in the season opener against the Bills. It came in the form of an unsolicited remark, which may have been his way of sending a not-so-subtle reminder to the Bills -- not that they needed reminding.
"I think we're all excited to see some Wildcat plays," Ryan said.
The Jets have been talking about it all summer, deploying Tim Tebow in a Wildcat-like offense, but they didn't show it in any preseason games. The idea was to keep the Bills (and other opponents) guessing. Ryan knows there would be an outcry if they didn't unveil it in the first game.
"If we don't, everybody would be like, 'Wait a second, you guys have been (talking) about the Wildcat, but we haven't seen one snap of it,'" Ryan said. "We're going to run some Wildcat, there's no doubt."
Ryan said they didn't keep the Wildcat under wraps to create a mystique.
"If that added to it, that wasn't our intent," he said. "Our intent was, there's no sense showing it right now in the preseason, just like I'm sure a lot of teams are saving specific things for their openers. We're not different than a lot of teams doing that."
Ryan doesn't expect to fool the Bills, saying they'll be more prepared than any opponent on their schedule. The Bills' quarterbacks coach is David Lee, who introduced the Wildcat to Tony Sparano while working on his Dolphins staff in 2008. The Bills also have ex-Jet Brad Smith, who ran the Jets' version of the Wildcat from 2006 to 2010.
So, on Sunday, it'll be a game of dueling Wildcats. Ryan said it'll be easier to prepare for Smith because they've practiced against Tebow. No doubt, the Bills feel the same way.
Let the (mind) game begin.
