In a somewhat surprising move, the Jets waived WR Patrick Turner. The team didn't announce a corresponding move, leaving the roster at 52.
The Jets have six receivers, so they evidently felt Turner was expendable for this week. There is a good chance he re-signs with the team -- if he clears waivers. It's possible they want to sign someone from the practice squad who could help this week against the Steelers.
OLB Ricky Sapp was re-signed to the practice squad. To make room, CB LeQuan Lewis was released from the practice squad.
Because of injuries at receiver, Turner received a lot of playing time in the preseason, finishing with five catches for 53 yards. He and QB Mark Sanchez have a rapport, dating to their days at Southern Cal.
The return of Chaz Schilens, who missed most of the preseason with a high-ankle sprain, no doubt impacted Turner's status. So did the recent arrival of speedster Clyde Gates, who was acquired on waivers from the Dolphins.
The Jets didn't conduct any player tryouts on Tuesday, according to a source.
