On Monday, Ravens FB LeRon McClain made an seemingly innocuous comment, saying he's happy the Jets settled the contract dispute with Darrelle Revis.
"I'm glad they got him," McClain told reporters in Baltimore, "so there won't be no excuses now."
Presumably, he meant, "No excuses when we beat them." Well, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan picked up on it and made an unsolicted reference to McClain's comment in Tuesday's news conference.
"I don't know what's wrong with LeRon," Ryan said. "He said something about there's no excuses ... He must have us confused with somebody else. I don't think we make any excuses. Last year, we didn't have our starting 11 guys on defense for a single game and yet we led the league.
"We don't make excuses. All we do is produce ... And that's what we're planning to do Monday night."
Fighting words from Ryan. What a shock.
