EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The 49ers could've made it a 41-0 blowout, but backup QB Colin Kaepernick executed a mercy slide at the two-minute warning, hitting the deck at the Jets' 3-yard line after a 30-yard run.

If anyone had him on their Fantasy team (hard to imagine many did), they'd be ticked off.

Afterward, Kaepernick said his decision had nothing to do with good sportsmanship.

"That's one less kickoff we have to cover," he said after the Niners' 34-0 win at MetLife Stadium. "That's one less time we have to go out on defense. We can end the game with no more collisions and chance of injury."

If he had scored, it would've been the second-largest shutout loss at home for the Jets. Instead, it was the third-largest. The last time they got blanked this badly at home was 1989, when they dropped a 37-0 decision to the Bills and fans were chanting, "Joe Must Go!"

Joe Walton, that is.

INJURY REPORT: WR Santonio Holmes suffered a potentially serious foot injury. X-rays were negative, according to a source, but he will have an MRI on Monday morning. He left the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a boot. ... TE Dedrick Epps (hyperextended knee) will have an MRI. ... FB John Conner, battling a knee injury, pulled a hamstring and didn't return.

GROUNDED AND POUNDED: The Jets' once-formidable running game is only rumor. They rushed for 45 yards, tied for the second-lowest total in the Rex Ryan era. This is hard to fathom, but their longest run was only five yards. Shonn Greene ran 11 times for 34 yards, another poor performance by the starting back.

ODDS AND ENDS: RB Joe McKnight made his 2012 debut on defense, appearing twice early in the game as a cornerback. He blitzed on both plays. ... The Jets actually recorded two sacks, on back-to-back plays -- Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace. ... The Jets had a punt blocked for the first time since 2008. Rex Ryan was galled because he said it came on a one-man rush. ... The 49ers made 10 plays of 12-plus yards; the Jets had only three.
