The Jets lost a key backup and core special-teams player Tuesday with the news that Josh Mauga will miss the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle, according to a league source.

Mauga, injured late in Monday night's 23-17 loss to the Texans, became the third player in the last three games to suffer a season-ending injury. He joined CB Darrelle Revis (knee) and WR Santonio Holmes (foot) on that list.

In five games, Mauga played in 50 defensive snaps (14 percent of the team's total). He finished with three tackles on defense and four on special teams.

The Jets have yet to confirm that Mauga is going on injured reserve. It will open up a roster spot. They didn't announce any roster moves Tuesday, but they worked out DT Matt Hardison, according to a source. He was on the Jets' camp roster earlier this year.
