Looking to bolster their thinning depth at running back, the Jets signed veteran free agent Kahlil Bell, a league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Bell worked out Tuesday for the Jets, along with free agent Steve Slaton. Slaton was thought to have the edge because he has familiarity with Tony Sparano's offense -- he played last season with the Dolphins -- but Bell played most recently. He spent a month with the Bears, who signed him in September when starter Matt Forte went down with an injury.
Bell, 25, who spent three seasons with the Bears, has 589 career rushing yards and a 4.5-yard average. He also has 21 receptions.
The Jets were down to one healthy tailback, Shonn Greene. Bilal Powell is unlikely to play Sunday against the Rams because of a concussion and Joe McKnight still is recovering from a high-ankle sprain.
The Jets have to clear a roster spot to make room for Bell.
