The Jets will meet Saturday with the man who could very well wind up being their new general manager -- Tom Gamble.
The smoke is starting to clear on GM searches around the league, with multiple league sources predicting that Gamble -- the 49ers' director of player personnel -- will land with the Jets.
Gamble turned down a second interview with the Jaguars to focus on the Jets' situation, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter. The Jaguars have narrowed their GM search to Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell and Cardinals vice president of player personnel Steve Keim. Caldwell interviewed Friday with the Jets.
Two other candidates on the Jets' radar appear to be fading. Packers director of football operations John Dorsey, scheduled to interview Saturday in Florham Park, is expected to land in Kansas City, where he'd be the GM and would be reunited with Andy Reid. They built a relationship when Reid was a Packers assistant.
Former Browns GM Tom Heckert, said to be high on the Jets' list, reportedly cancelled his interview with the team.
The Jets still are considering their in-house candidate, assistant GM Scott Cohen, and Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross. But Ross also is drawing interest from the Panthers and Chargers.
Unless there's a wild card in the mix, the Jets appear poised to jump on Gamble, who has East-Coast ties. Gamble, the son of former Eagles president Harry Gamble, began his career in an entry-level position with the Eagles and worked his way up through the scouting and personnel ranks. He actually spent two seasons as a quality-control coach for the Jets under Rich Kotite (1995-1996).
The Jets received a glowing recommendation on Gamble from former NFL executive Bill Polian, who worked as the Colts' GM when Gamble was a college scout for the team. Gamble has spent seven years with the 49ers, currently overseeing pro and college scouting under GM Trent Baalke, a former Jets scout.
