Ellis sprains left knee in victory

10/3/2010

ORCHARD PARK -- The biggest downer, maybe the only downer, in the New York Jets' 38-14 victory was an injury to Shaun Ellis.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, Ellis sprained his left knee on a sack of Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ellis left the game and didn't return, but the early indications are that it's not serious. The veteran defensive end called it a sprained patellar ligament, adding that he hopes to play next Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

Ellis said an MRI is likely, but he didn't seem too alarmed. Neither did Rex Ryan, who called it "a little bit of a sprained knee."

The Jets can't afford another injury to the defensive line, which already has lost Kris Jenkins (knee) and Ropati Pitoitua (Achilles' tendon) to season-ending injuries. They added depth by signing former Baltimore Raven Trevor Pryce, who made his Jets debut and played about 20 snaps.

Vernon Gholston got most of the work in Ellis' spot.
