ESPN's cameras showed Geno Smith in the green room as the Jets mulled the 13th pick Thursday night. They had their choice of any quarterback. It made for good drama.
In fact, the Jets never considered a quarterback in the first round, according to a source. At 13, they selected DT Sheldon Richardson. Earlier, it was CB Dee Milliner with the ninth pick.
"They were two of the highest-rated players on our board by far," GM John Idzik said.
The drama will build again Friday night because only one quarterback was picked in the first round, EJ Manuel. Smith, Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley remain on the board, and there are five teams picking at the top of the second round that could be in the market -- the Jaguars (33rd overall), Eagles (35), Cards (38), Jets (39) and Raiders (42).
The Jets did a lot of homework on Smith and Nassib, and you can bet there will be internal discussion as they prepare for Round 2. Picking a quarterback that high certainly would alter the dynamic at the position. Right now, it's slated to be an open competition between Mark Sanchez, David Garrard and Greg McElroy. If Smith or Nassib falls to the Jets, their pick will increase in value and perhaps a quarterback-needy team below them would want to trade up.
