CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan didn't say which quarterback will start the preseason opener Friday night in Detroit, but the Jets' coach is planning to change the practice rotation.
For the first nine practices, Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith alternated every third day with the first-team offense. Based on that, Sanchez should be the "starter" on Tuesday, but Ryan indicated that he may go with the rookie. Maybe Ryan is switching to an every-other-day rotation; he was tight-lipped on the details.
Monday was a spotty day for Smith, who threw two interceptions in 7-on-7 drills, both in the red zone. If you're keeping score at home, he has a total of three interceptions in 7-on-7s, none in team drills.
"Down in the red zone, I think I need to do a better job at taking care of the ball," Smith said.
Ryan cut the kid some slack.
"It's not like he's going to be like Nolan Ryan and pitch a shutout out there," he said. "As long as we learn from it then it can almost be a positive, but if you don’t learn from it obviously it’s a huge negative."
