FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Not many teams can create quarterback suspense for the final preseason game, but the Jets aren't like most teams. On Monday, Rex Ryan declined to name his starter for Thursday night against the Eagles. All he'd say is that Mark Sanchez (shoulder) has been ruled out.
The Jets would like to play Smith, who needs game experience, but they don't want to risk an injury. After all, Smith could end up being the Week 1 starter, depending on how Sanchez responds to shoulder rehab. The organization is hopeful that Sanchez, who may resume throwing by the end of the week, will be ready for the opener. But there's no guarantee.
ADIOS, AUSSIE: In a move announced late Monday night, the Jets released tight end Hayden Smith, the former rugby star who spent most of last season on the practice squad. It came as no surprise. Smith had been working behind Jeff Cumberland, Konrad Reuland and Kellen Winslow. The Australian-born Smith didn't play organized football until last season and made nice strides, but he didn't get many reps in camp. He's still eligible for the practice squad.
