Perhaps the biggest upset of the draft is that GM Mike Tannenbaum has yet to make a trade. Oh, he tried.
On Friday, he talked to teams about moving up in the second round. Nothing. He talked to teams about moving down. Nothing. He also talked to teams about getting back into the third round. (Remember, the Jets traded their third-rounder last season for WR Braylon Edwards.) Again, nothing.
Tannenbaum was asked if he's experiencing trade withdrawal. He laughed.
"We did a lot of practice trading," he said. "I thought I made some really good ones on paper."
The draft isn't over yet, so there's still hope. On Saturday, the Jets have picks in the fourth, sixth and seventh rounds.
Other thoughts and observations about Day 2:
1. Not surprised at all that the Jets went for T/G Vlad Ducasse in the second round. Earlier in the day, I wrote that the Jets were going to go big, with either an offensive or defensive lineman. Massive NT Terrence Cody went fourth spots ahead of Ducasse to the Ravens. Mt. Cody is about the size of two Leon Washingtons.
2. The Jets haven't addressed the pass rush, but they evidently believe they touched on that issue with the Jason Taylor signing. A player they visited with before the draft, Clemson OLB Ricky Sapp, still is on the board. So is USC DE Everson Griffen. They also passed on Northwestern DE Corey Wootton, a talented player with some medical issues.
3. What might the Jets do on Saturday? Their top needs are defensive line (maybe two), safety and perhaps another receiver.
4. They need to pick a player from New York to make it a true tri-state draft. They got Kyle Wilson from Piscataway, N.J., and Ducasse from Stamford, Conn.
5. For a man who speaks three languages, Ducasse, born in Haiti, is a man of few words. His best quote: "I'm still learning the game and, as the year goes on with Coach (Bill) Callahan, I think I would like to say that the sky is the limit."
Maybe being around Rex Ryan will open him up.
