There was a lot of hype, from the good-natured trash talking to Rex Ryan's wig costume to Rob Ryan's weight belt. The twin brothers enjoyed the build up to Sunday's game in Cleveland, but when it got down to business, Rex tried to remove all emotion.
"It wasn't just personal for me, it was personal for a lot of guys," the New York Jets coach said after a 26-20 overtime win over the Cleveland Browns. "Like I told our guys, 'At 1 o'clock, they're nameless, faceless objects, and that's what you have to treat it as. Whether it's your twin brother, your friend or whomever, you've got a job to do.' Our goal is to be a champion, and we have to find ways to get it done. That's what we did."
This was a Ryan-type game -- a lot of defense and power football. There were 70 runs by the two teams and only four touchdowns scored. In the end, Rob -- the Browns defensive coordinator -- ended up with egg on his face, as the Browns missed three tackles on the final play of the game. That was Santonio Holmes' 37-yard touchdown reception in overtime.
Rex and Rob spent time together before the game, having a long conversation on the field. At one point, Eric Mangini joined them and gave Rex a hug. They became friends through Rob, who was unavailable after the game. Afterward, Rex couldn't stop gushing about the Browns.
"I don't know who else they have to beat to show they're legitimate, but that team right there is a tough team," Ryan said, alluding to the Browns' upset wins over the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots. "They're awfully good. They're smart and they get after it."
This was the eighth Ryan Bowl. Rex is 3-0 in NFL games, Rob owns a 3-2 advantage in college games.
