FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan will conduct his final 2013 practice Friday -- perhaps his final practice as coach of the New York Jets. Just for kicks, I decided to go back to the first practice in training camp, July 26, pulling out a few Ryan quotes that may prompt a smile or a shake of the head.

Here you go:

"Great day. I think the MVP of the offense today was (Clyde) Gates."

Our take: Hello, Mr. July.

"I don’t think (Geno Smith looks like a rookie). I’m seeing a guy that -- you see it out there -- he can throw it with anybody. I don’t know (about) anybody, but he can throw it with most. I don’t know if he can throw it with (Jay) Cutler. I don’t know if he can throw it with the kid from Detroit (Matthew Stafford). But I know one thing, he can throw it. ... There are some real positives and minuses. We’ll really watch that tape, and I’m sure you’re going to see some ups and downs with all the guys."

Our take: Early signs of the Geno-coaster.

"When I said in the opening press conference that it is a new beginning for me, that’s how it feels. It’s a brand new start. That’s how I’m approaching it. What’s happened in the past with me, whether positive or negative, you learn and you move on. This is where it is, it’s a new beginning for me."

Our take: Will John Idzik put an end to the new beginning?

"The first step was today’s practice and all that, but we’re trying to get to the top floor and we don’t have the luxury of just hitting the button. We’re not taking the elevator up there. We’re taking the steps and we’re not going to miss one of them. We know we have to hit every step to get there and this is just one step today."

Our take: I wonder what he would've said if he knew he'd have to start a rookie quarterback the entire season. It has been like walking the staircase in a skyscaper.

ICYMI: The Jets are playing out the string and the Miami Dolphins are playing for a playoff berth, but that didn't stop Antonio Cromartie from sharing his opinions. He relishes the prospect of ruining the Dolphins' season. ... Busy day for Cromartie: He also discusses possible hip surgery and his desire to remain with the Jets despite a contract that needs to be re-worked. ... Sheldon Richardson plans to appeal his $15,000 fine for roughing the passer. ... Check out the final edition of "Gang Green Report."
