FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rookie Sheldon Richardson, who provided plenty of entertaining quotes throughout the season, remained true to form on the last day.
"I am the defensive rookie of the year," Richardson told reporters Monday at the New York Jets' "baggy" day. "I don’t have odds. That’s just how I feel. If anyone has an opinion on it, they can state their opinion but that’s just me."
Does he really believe he's the top defensive rookie?
"Most definitely," he said. "Most definitely. That’s not even a question."
Richardson and Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso are considered the leading candidates for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Richardson was terrific, starting every game, recording 3.5 sacks and grading out well versus the run. In recent weeks, however, he's made news on the offensive side of the ball, scoring two rushing touchdowns. He became the first defensive lineman since William (The Refrigerator) Perry in 1985 to score twice in the same season.
