CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A few takeaways from Monday's New York Jets practice:

Allen
New look at corner: With Dee Milliner (ankle) and Dexter McDougle (knee) sidelined, the Jets moved safety Antonio Allen to cornerback. He worked with the starting unit, opposite Ellis Lankster. How does a Allen-Lankster cornerback tandem grab you? Remember, Dimitri Patterson still is nursing a variety of injuries. Allen, playing corner for the first time, made two interceptions. He picked off Geno Smith while covering Jeremy Kerley and he made a nice interception on a Michael Vick deep ball to Stephen Hill. It was an encouraging first day for Allen, but let's not get carried away.

Protect the ball: Ball security was an issue, as there were three interceptions -- two by Allen and another by linebacker Jason Babin, who picked off a Vick pass that was deflected at the line by defensive end Tevita Finau. There also was a fumble on a pitch by Vick to running back Daryl Richardson. This was a nice practice for Finau, who also had a "sack."

For the most part, Smith has avoided interceptions in team drills. Unofficially, this was only his fourth interception in camp. It's the same for Vick, with fewer attempts. On Monday, Smith was 10-for-17, with one touchdown (David Nelson) and one interception. He took 23 reps with the first-team offense. He threw the ball "extremely well," according to Rex Ryan. Smith was sharp in the seven-on-seven drill, showing good arm strength on deep throws to the sideline. It hasn't been announced yet, but Smith will start the second preseason game.

Vick got only four reps with the starters, finishing 11-for-15, with one touchdown (Greg Salas) and two interceptions. Vick's highlight was a long completion to Hill on a trick play.

Long-drive competition: They conducted longer-than-usual team periods, going as long as 15 plays. A 15-play drive is uncommon, but the idea was to improve conditioning and concentration over a sustained period.

Medical report: Wide receiver Eric Decker (quadriceps) and running back Chris Ivory (ribs) each sat out for the third straight day. ... Cornerback Jeremy Reeves (knee) and linebacker Tim Fugger (knee) also didn't practice. ... Rookie defensive end Anthony Grady injured an MCL and didn't finish. ... Running back Chris Johnson and linebacker Garrett McIntyre had rest days. ... Tackle Brent Qvale (concussion) returned.

Odds and ends: Rookie safety Calvin Pryor, who will make his debut Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals, recorded a sack. ... It was an up and down day for Hill, who made a couple of nice catches but also had a drop along the sideline. ... Darrin Walls and Ras-I Dowling played cornerback with the second team. ... This was a nice day for Salas, who made several catches. ... There were a couple of big plays for the "Sons of Anarchy." Muhammad Wilkerson made a sack and Sheldon Richardson batted a pass at the line. ... Backup nickelback Johnny Patrick made a nice pass breakup on a long pass to rookie Jalen Saunders. Patrick will get a good look now that he's healthy.
