So maybe it’s not the perfectly-named JetBlue, but the New Meadowlands Stadium finally has another suitor for naming rights, according to a report in the SportsBusiness Journal.
Apparently the stadium group is in talks with the insurance company MetLife for naming rights worth a reported $17 million a year. The stadium already has key sponsors, such as Pepsi and Verizon, but no company had agreed to pay for naming rights when the stadium opened last year. Since then, the Meadowlands was given the 2014 Super Bowl, which no doubt made it a more attractive target.
Nonetheless, the stadium's management team was initially looking to get $30 million for the naming rights, but the timing of construction with an economic downturn didn’t help. Allianz, another insurance company, was interested in naming rights early on, but encountered public outcry after media reports surfaced about ties to the Nazis.
