Notes: QBs, the biggest losers & contracts

Some air-conditioned Sunday notes on your favorite team:

THE BACKUP QB SHUFFLE

In case you haven't noticed, the New York Jets still haven’t signed free-agent QB Mark Brunell, who was supposed to be a done deal as soon as the "Final Eight" restrictions were lifted. Barring an unforeseen curve in the road, it’ll still get done by next Sunday, the start of training camp. The question is, who goes? It's hard to imagine the Jets going to camp with five QBs. We all thought Kellen Clemens would be the odd-man out, but it appears the Jets still are sorting out their quarterback depth chart.

HONEY, I SHRUNK THE RIGHT TACKLE

Damien Woody is taking this weight-loss thing very seriously. He spent a week at the Duke Weight Loss Center and has dropped 25 pounds, still hoping to shed another 10 by the start of camp. His goal is 325. One of his competitors in the Jets’ “Biggest Loser” contest, NT Kris Jenkins, has dropped 25 pounds on a cookie diet. No kidding. He, too, is aiming for another 10. No word on how the third contestant, Rex Ryan, is faring.

STARTING TO DOUBT THOMAS

In the spring, there was heated speculation about the Jets pursuing former Patriots LB Adalius Thomas, a Ryan favorite from their days in Baltimore. Ryan himself indicated there could be some interest down the road. Well, don’t hold your breath on that happening. Right now, the Jets have no interest in Thomas.

THE WILSON TALKS

It’s not an absolute slam dunk that first-round pick Kyle Wilson will sign before the start of camp. His agent, Joel Segal, has a track record of waiting until his player is “slotted” before making a deal. In other words, he’ll gauge the market by letting the picks around him sign. So far, only one first-round pick has signed – Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (24th overall). Wilson was chosen 29th. You should see a lot of activity this week at the bottom of the round, which should accelerate the Wilson talks.

WES IN WAITING

Speaking of Wilson, he’d better be ready to go in Week 2. According to reports out of Boston, Patriots WR Wes Welker, coming off a major knee injury, has made a terrific recovery and will be ready to go in training camp. Welker is one of the premier slot receivers in the league. Wilson, the projected nickel back, will face slot receivers. Good luck, kid.

ONE FOR THE TEAM

In explaining his decision to eschew a training-camp holdout, C Nick Mangold said he wants to be around to help groom the new left guard – untested Matt Slauson or rookie Vlad Ducasse. Mangold is rightfully upset with his contract situation, but he understands the big picture and put his personal interests aside. Will Darrelle Revis do the same? We should know in a week.
